Lewis Hamilton took his 60th F1 victory – his third in Singapore and seventh of the 2017 season. His teammate Valtteri Bottas finished in P3 – his best result in Singapore and his 10th podium of the 2017 season. Hamilton also completed the fastest lap of the Grand Prix in Formula 1’s first-ever wet night race.
The Sep 17 result is the 73rd F1 win for the Silver Arrows and the team’s ninth of the current season. Hamilton, with 263 points, extends his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 28 points from Sebastian Vettel (235 points), with Valtteri (212 points) a further 23 points behind the Ferrari driver. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team, with 475 points in the bag, leads Ferrari (373 points) by 102 points in the 2017 Constructors’ Championship.
Hamilton said after the race: “What a day – I can’t believe it, I’m so happy! I came in today and I saw that I was raining and I knew that this balances everything out. I love racing in the rain, then everything unfolded in the beginning. We came to a track that was potentially our weakest circuit and we leave with a win like this and so many points – that’s a very fortunate scenario for us. Valtteri also did a great job, so to have all these constructors’ points is awesome.”
Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo revealed his delight at navigating his way through big crashes and a wet track to claim second place at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Ricciardo started the race in third position.
Ricciardo’s teammate Max Verstappen, who started in second position, was sandwiched in between the two Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen off the start line, and all three were forced to retire from the race. Hamilton then took the lead for good, with Ricciardo safely staying in second.
Ricciardo said after the race: “The rain made it all pretty hectic today. Everyone was in the same boat though and we hadn’t driven in the wet here before, so it’s all about switching on early, being aware of the situation and trying to adapt as quick as you can. My start was quite slow off the line. In hindsight probably a good thing, because it allowed the chaos to unfold in front of me. Of course I came here to win and really wanted it, but second place is great and I’m not going to complain about it.”
