Hardly civil

Just where did our smooth roads go?
Over the weekend, I was driving along Dunearn Road towards the city when I found myself switching lanes uneasily. Instead of an uninterrupted runway black bitumen demarcated by white lines, the road had the texture of crusty croissant or the homework of a school-going giant who has covered his scrawl with black correction tape, repeatedly. The car rode like it was traversing over speed strips, erratically laid speed strips. It's the closest thing to off-road driving for me in the past 12 months!
Maybe the regulars who use this stretch of road all have limousines with air pillows for suspension. Why the various departments (utilities, public works, etc) choose to lay their lines / cables / pipes under all three lanes and can't seem cover up the holes properly is a mystery.
Maybe our best civil engineers are deployed to pave the Marina Street Circuit –because we don't want to give any F1 driver the excuse to blame us for causing his accident and helping his team-mate move up the rungs to score podium points…
Not my best rant I have to admit, but it's all head jogging mysteries to me. Give me back the good roads and the days when racing is just that.
