Those eyes on the overhead bridges… they got me. It's probably a familiar tale for the tens, if not hundreds of drivers who get snapped by the mobile speed cameras each month, I didn't even know I got "hit".
Well, the letter marked "On Government Service" showed that I did, breaching the speed limit on the PIE by 13km/h.
Thirteen kilometres an hour.
A bicycle with a tail wind probably goes quicker than 13km/h. The escalators at many of the MRT stations feel quicker than 13km/h. In a car, cruising on a trailing throttle at 80km/h, will effortlessly drift beyond 13km/h on a gentle downslope.
You can imagine the many drivers who will be at the Traffic Police's doors asking for leniency for their slight error in judgement, whether it be for going 11km/h, 13km/h or 20km/h above the limit.
Chances are that slight minor transgressions are common, so much so that without even asking, the cops have merely made a note about my particular slip up, making it a warning, rather than slapping the fines and demerit points. Thank you officer.
While we are musing about law enforcement, the motorised bicycle has resurfaced. Just tonight, I saw one buzzing along a busy road. It didn't have a working light and the rider, clad in shorts and slippers, obviously wasn't wearing a helmet. Now that's a problem.
