PARKING IDIOT

Stomp is a very popular online portal to catch sights in and around Singapore.

The job of investigating the story behind the many Mpegs and Jpegs lie with the journalists at The New Paper and Lianhe Wanbao along with Mr Citizen Reporter with an exceedingly generous data plan to upload more Mpegs and Jpegs.

I bet that in many instances it's perfectly legitimate to alert the world of the perpetrators and the injustice they bring; the reckless delivery guy, the bad parkers and the girl in short skirt that distracted one's husband*. But there is something else. It may not be exactly the best thing to spend office hours on but it is quite an annoying thing without a decent forum to gain traction.

On many public car parks, spots near the lifts are designated handicap lots. This is definitely helpful for those who need it. But there are instances when these lots are set at the top of a narrow ramp. So the other drivers end up encroaching into the lots to make the turn or risk leaving paint samples on the wall. Things become trickier when a vehicle (with a prominently displayed blue and white label, or it will be Stomped) actually takes up the spot.

In even more instances, the corners at the car parks seems to be modelled for tracked vehicles and Bobcats capable of pivoting 90-degree on the spot. For the rest of us driving cars with four wheels, the choice is between sacrificing the edge of the bumper and scrapping the nearside wheels against the sharply angled kerb.

It doesn't stop when you finally arrive at an empty lot because chances are that the dimensions are meant for cars much smaller than today's long and wide saloons. (For the record, today's Civic is bigger than the Accord from 1989 while the Accord on sale now is just 10mm shorter than yesterday's Mercedes 280S.)

So even if you are able to expertly reverse the car into the lot without touching the vehicle in the opposite lot (sticking out of its lot because it's too long and so should be Stomped!), you'll find that your car doesn't fit in the spot very well. To top it off, you may not be able to get out of the car without inflicting a nasty door ding on the poor thing parked in the adjacent lot. If you have a child to unlatch from the child seat, the neighbouring car is a definite goner – which means that you will get Stomped for being such an inconsiderate driver.

Of course these are hardly concerns to the majority of surfers who tends to be more interested in commuters who "act blur" and not give up their seats for the elderly and men getting swatted by his angry female companion.

*P.S. In case you haven't been to Stomp before, it's at www.stomp.com.sg and it's really quite fun to check out during coffee breaks
