Many of the bicycles from bicycle-sharing companies have surfaced in strange places – submerged in canals, thrown into drains, hidden in bushes and even covered in sand on beaches.
With such devices easily able to reach speeds of about 20-25km/h, there are good reasons for authorities to consider a ban, say for those 12 years old and below.
There have been 38 personal mobility device (PMD) users caught riding on the roads this year, up from just 22 over the same period last year, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Monday (Jan 15).
In all, about 110 accidents took place between January and September last year, the first time these figures were being released.
Errant users have caused bike-sharing to make headlines for the wrong reasons, and questions also remain about bike sharing’s financial viability.
Called SecureMyBike, the system, located within the Kampung Admiralty integrated development next to Admiralty MRT station, can house more than 500 bicycles. It will be free to users until Jan 31.
Without proper infrastructure, safety is compromised when PMDs, pedestrians share paths.
Within the span of an hour, a total of six PMD users were seen riding on Geylang Road and Sims Avenue.
