This winsome threesome are not the newest toys in town, especially the Beetle (launched here in 2000 and lightly updated in 2005). But they are true icons of motoring – forever young, yet rich in history, and destined to always move in convoy in the hearts and minds of motorists.
The Fiat, MINI and Volkswagen all play the retro card, but not to the point of being regressive. Even though they celebrate their heritage with pride and faithfully recreate the looks of their respective ancestors, they are ultimately modern driving machines for the drivers of today.
These happy hatchbacks differ wildly in their engineering, inspiration and character.
But they employ the same front-engine, front-drive format, and are essentially functional city cars making a fashion statement.
Now for some shameless cuteness caught in the act…
500 – Upright seating is ensconced in a cosy and classy cockpit without a glovebox. Blue&Me feature, with Bluetooth and USB plug-in, is fantastic.
ONE – Beautiful driving position and excellent visibility in all directions. Not the most spacious supermini around, but desirable and quite practical.
BEETLE – Roomy for occupants and with plenty of storage pockets. The upholstery isn’t upmarket.
