Volvo has once again pushed the envelope in automotive safety, with its Inflatable Child Seat prototype. Designed to fit into a big backpack, the ultra-portable child seat has an integrated pump for inflation/deflation and weighs less than 5kg, which is half the weight of a typical child seat. It is made of a strong, pressure-proof material called drop-stitch fabric, which is also used for inflatable boats and rescue equipment. Volvo has indeed come a long way since it introduced the first rearward-facing child seat prototype in 1964.
