When the name “Testarossa” is uttered, a kaleidoscope of 1980s nostalgia unfurls, more specifically the vision of a red Ferrari slicing through the Miami heat. Immortalised by TV series Miami Vice, the Testarossa wasn’t merely a car; it was a cultural symbol of excess and aspiration.
Now, nearly 40 years later, the legend has been reborn. Ferrari has resurrected one of its most evocative names with the launch of the Ferrari 849 Testarossa, unveiled for the first time in Southeast Asia at a glittering regional premiere in Bangkok’s ICONSIAM.
The Southeast Asian debut, hosted by Cavallino Motors, Ferrari’s official importer and distributor in Thailand, transformed ICONSIAM’s Pinnacle Hall into a theatre of light, power and action. The 849 Testarossa made its dramatic entrance, its yellow amber (or Giallo Ambra, in Ferrari speak) silhouette reflecting the collective admiration of the media in the room from across the region. It was a chance to witness not just another Ferrari, but the return of an icon, reborn for a new generation of drivers. Or rather, for “true drivers,” as stated by Marco Spessotto, Product Marketing Manager of Ferrari, at the event.

The name “Testarossa” – which translates literally as “redhead” in Italian – first came up in 1956, referring to the scarlet cam covers of Ferrari’s racing engines in the 1950s. However, it was the 1984 Ferrari Testarossa that cemented the name in pop-culture lore. With its wide stance, side strakes and unmistakable wedge-shaped silhouette, the original Testarossa became an emblem of the 1980s and a symbol of glamour and excess, adored by Wall Street executives and Hollywood alike.
Fast forward four decades, the spirit of that era lives on and gets reignited in the new 849 Testarossa. Its twin-turbo V8 engine now produces 818hp on its own, with a staggering combined 1,035hp when paired with its trio of electric motors. This plug-in hybrid system is the most powerful ever fitted to a Ferrari production car, eclipsing even the formidable SF90 it replaces.

Interestingly, the number “849” itself pays homage to the engine’s configuration, derived from the V8 layout and the 499cc displacement per cylinder.
In typical Maranello fashion, every component is an engineering sonnet. The V8 – codenamed F154FC – has been completely re-engineered, featuring larger turbos, lightweight titanium fasteners and recycled aluminium castings that cut CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. The result is a breath-taking blend of speed and sustainability, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in under 2.3 seconds (equivalent to that of a Formula 1 car) and topping 330km/h.
Despite its monstrous output, the car remains lithe; its power-to-weight ratio of 1.5kg per horsepower is the best ever achieved in a Ferrari range model. The hybrid system allows an all-electric range of 25 kilometres, offering silent city cruising before unleashing the mechanical symphony of its V8 on open roads.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
At first glance, the 849 Testarossa’s design is both futuristic and familiar. The sharp, geometric lines recall the 1970s Ferrari Sports Prototypes, while the iconic wide stance and horizontal rear strakes whisper the spirit of the 1984 original. Yet every curve serves a purpose. Aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 15%, and downforce reaches an impressive 415 kg at 250 km/h, 25 kg more than the SF90 Stradale.
Flavio Manzoni and his team at Ferrari’s Styling Centre have crafted a silhouette that feels almost sculptural. The twin-tail rear design, inspired by the 512 S, integrates seamlessly with an active spoiler capable of shifting between low-drag and high-downforce configurations in less than a second. The effect is not just aesthetic but visceral. The front fascia, with its bridge-like horizontal element, harks back to 1980s Ferrari design cues while ushering in a new visual language.

INSIDE THE COCKPIT
Open the door, and you step into a world where analogue charm meets digital precision. The cockpit envelops the driver like a tailored suit. The signature “central sail” design, inspired by the F80, flows through the dashboard, integrating the gear-change gate and digital controls into a single sculptural form. Physical buttons have made a triumphant return on the steering wheel, including the iconic red engine start button, a nod to those who prefer tactile engagement over touchscreen abstraction.
A new Human-Machine Interface (HMI) ensures intuitive interaction, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the MyFerrari Connect app providing seamless digital connectivity. Passengers aren’t left out either – a dedicated screen on the dashboard lets them share in the thrill, from speed readouts to media controls.
The 849 Testarossa’s interior strikes a balance between race-bred purpose and grand-touring comfort. Options are available for sculpted comfort seats or lightweight carbon-fibre racing seats upholstered in black Alcantara. For those who wish to make a statement, Ferrari offers personalisation options in Giallo Ambra and Giallo Siena – a warm amber-gold pairing that radiates modern sophistication.
For drivers who crave the sharpest edge of performance, Ferrari offers the Assetto Fiorano package, a 30kg weight reduction achieved through the use of carbon fibre, titanium, and lightweight tubular seats. Aerodynamics are taken to extremes with larger flicks, a redesigned underfloor, and twin wings that triple downforce without compromising drag. Stiffer shock absorbers and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres further amplify the car’s track readiness.
The Assetto Fiorano’s exclusive livery, in either Bianco Cervino or Rosso Corsa, features a graduated stripe motif that sweeps from bonnet to tail, a visual nod to Ferrari’s racing stripes of old, reinterpreted for the modern era.

Underpinning all this artistry is innovation borrowed straight from Formula 1. Ferrari’s FIVE estimator, a digital twin that simulates the car’s dynamics in real time, ensures precision handling even at the limit. The advanced ABS Evo and brake-by-wire systems translate driver inputs into surgical control, while torque vectoring and adaptive damping deliver confidence in every corner. It’s a level of sophistication that elevates the 849 Testarossa beyond mere performance to a sensory experience.
The 849 Testarossa represents a full-circle moment for Ferrari. It is a revival that respects its roots while blazing a path forward. Where the 1984 Testarossa became a pop-culture icon of excess, the 2025 edition embodies evolved luxury: conscious, connected, and committed to performance without compromise.
For Southeast Asia’s enthusiasts, seeing the Testarossa nameplate return feels symbolic. The region’s passion for high-performance automobiles has evolved, much like Ferrari itself. The 849 Testarossa represents heritage re-engineered for the hybrid age.
Singaporeans won’t have long to wait to see it on local roads. The Ferrari 849 Testarossa will retail here at S$2,098,251 for the coupe and S$2,281,858 for the hard-top Spider, before COE and options.
