If someone you know is a geek for scale models, then Mercedes-Benz’s Actros tractor unit and semi-trailer combination is sure to delight them.
The car transporter is a combination of the new model series of the legendary Actros GigaSpace tractor unit and a semitrailer capable of transporting up to six model cars of 1:18 scale.
It’s a lovely piece of work with some serious engineering to back it up.
Not just any scale model, Mercedes-Benz said it partnered with “renowned model vehicle manufacturer” NZG to produce the Actros scale model.
“Even the tiniest of details inside and outside the Actros are clearly recognisable,” Mercedes-Benz proudly states, adding it has “moved into unfamiliar territory” with the development of the scale model.
All in, it took ten months of development to get the 22.5 cm wide, 13.7 cm high semitrailer into shape, Mercedes-Benz said.

It’s made out of a staggering 500 individual components. Out of those, 167 are zinc, 80 are plastic and 32 are etched parts held together with 225 screws, pins and tools.
The Mercedes Actros tractor unit itself is similarly complex.
Some 59 zinc, 225 plastic and 10 etched components make up the Actros unit, which is screwed together with 154 screws, pins and tools.
Especially impressive, Mercedes-Benz says, is the tippable cab of the Actros tractor which lets you see the engine in all its glory.

The vehicle platforms and the loading ramps for the upper and lower levels are made of “high-quality metal” and have the characteristic hole-structure of the original.
All components of the original vehicle which can be moved, can also be used accordingly on the scale model. Protected by movable flaps, even the operating levers for the ramps and on the central axle are true-to-detail, Mercedes-Benz lovingly points out.
Photos show anything from scale models of the X-Class to the CLS-Class on the semi-trailer, but you could easily replace them with any other six 1:18 scale models should your dollar not stretch far.
