The latest Mercedes-Benz GLA is now in Singapore and is available in two variants: the GLA200 Progressive and GLA200 AMG. Prices start from $176,888.
NEW EXTERIOR DESIGN
The GLA is Mercedes’ entry-level SUV and the smallest one in their range of sports utility vehicles. Interestingly, it is also the shortest model in the entire passenger car range.
Compared to the previous model, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA has shorter overhangs and a wheelbase that’s now 30mm longer than before. But it also has a taller stance thanks to its height, which is 104mm higher than previously.
Like the older model, the GLA isn’t just a raised A-Class. Designers have given the GLA SUV-specific features, such as a grille with a single louvre and centrally placed star.
The doors now cover the sills, which ensure that your legs or pants do not get wet or dirty. Another improvement is the tail-lights, which are now two-piece items. They make for a wider rear loading aperture.
ENHANCED CABIN
Like other new Mercedes models, the Mercedes-Benz GLA features Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) – a digital instrument panel and infotainment system.
The GLA can be specified with two 10.25-inch screens and the optional full-colour head-up display for added convenience. The digital voice assistance, activated by saying “Hey Mercedes”, is also standard.
Interior space has also been improved. Apart from more headroom and legroom, designers also increased shoulder room and elbow room for added comfort.
For added practicality, the boot volume has also been enlarged. With the rear seats up, it now stands at 435 litres, or 14 litres more than before.
New available safety features include Active Distance Assist Distronic, Active Steer Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist. The latter even detects cyclists approaching from behind, and warns occupants not to open the door.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE
The Mercedes-Benz GLA200 is powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre inline-4 capable of 163hp and 250Nm.
Paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the GLA200 does the century sprint in 8.7 seconds. Mercedes claims a combined fuel consumption of 6.1 litres/100km, or 16.4km/L.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
The new Mercedes-Benz GLA is available in Progressive and AMG Line variants, which are priced at $176,88 and $182,888 respectively.
